Recently, Akron-Westfield Schools completed the process of testing all of the rooms within the school building along with the bus garage for radon. We are pleased to report that all of our test results came back below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) advised radon action level of 4.0 pCi/L. This means we now have peace of mind that our students, staff, and community are learning and working in spaces that are as safe as possible from radon.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Radon travels through the ground and may enter buildings through cracks and holes in the foundation. Every building and home can trap radon gas inside it, and prolonged exposure to elevated radon can increase the risk of lung cancer.
January is National Radon Action Month. If you would like to test your home, you can learn more by going to the US EPA website.
Future Testing
The State of Iowa now requires all schools to test for radon every five years. Akron-Westfield will test again during the 2029-30 school year. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me directly by phone at 712-568-2020 or via email at dbriggs@akron-westfield.com.
